Jim Shields has been a passionate entrepreneur since joining his father, Charles Shields, in the practice of law. Fast forward 31 years, and Jim is even more passionate about the personal and business benefits of being an entrepreneur.
Along the way, he discovered a strong interest in helping others discover the value of entrepreneurship and the strong work ethic it encourages.
Jim did not hesitate when asked to judge in the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) 2014 Spring Regional Business Plan Competition. The top three student business plans from the 2013/14 school year are presented at the event, held on Thursday, June 19. The panel of judges determines which business plan should represent NFTE North Texas at the National Competition on October 9, 2014 in San Francisco.
NFTE provides classes and training to almost 1,000 high school students in 12 different high schools in the North Texas area. Most of these students are from poor to low-income families and they have never been exposed to the information that the NTFE classes provide. The impact on these student is immeasurable.
During the 2013-14 school year, nearly 600 students started their own businesses in neighborhoods where the odds for them to stay in school and graduate were very low. Students learned why their core classes were relevant to their success in life, they created a business based on their own ideas, and they presented their business plans to their classmates, school advisory boards and administrators. They also participated in a regional competition to advance to the final round that will be judged on June 19, 2014.
After Jim learned more about the NFTE program, he observed that “the impact of the NFTE program is priceless.” He is excited to be a small part of this program and is encouraged by the number of high school students who participated. He believes that “a strong future is ensured when the principles of entrepreneurship are taught to everyone.”
