As August winds its long, hot way through the freedom of summer back towards the regimen of school, one fact stands out. Not every child in North Texas will have the supplies she needs to start school prepared.

The Fill-a-Backpack School Supply Drive provides business and companies with a way to help send kids to school with the proper supplies. Various charitable programs and non-profit organizations, such as Our Friends’ Place, Dallas and Collin County Children’s Advocacy Centers, Jonathan’s Place, Interfaith Housing Coalition, and many others joined together to fill as many backpacks as possible.

Cawley Partners is one of the businesses who reached out to their tenants to spread the word about the campaign. The supplies that they collected from their tenants were given to The New Beginning Center, a 501 (c)(3) organization that provides counseling and outreach services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

“When Shields Legal Group learned of the Fill-a-Backpack, we knew immediately that we wanted to participate,” said Kathy Hoke, Managing Partner/Shareholder. “Besides the direct impact to helping children, the program also fit in with our IMPACT l 365 program.”

IMPACT l 365 is a program started by Shields Legal Group to provide a structured way for its employees and attorneys to give back. The purpose of IMPACT l 365 is to inspire the individuals who work at SLG to take intentional action every day to help someone else.

The response to the Fill-a-Backpack Drive from SLG members and employees was overwhelming. Based on a list of 19 items, we filled 6 backpacks!

Lisa Rutherford, the Cawley Partners Property Manager for Parkside (where SLG’s offices are located), was also overwhelmed by the response. “We sent out the invitation to the tenants in both of our buildings, and I have to admit that I was not sure how strong a response we would receive,” Rutherford said. “We were given 21 backpacks to fill and we ended up collecting enough supplies to fill 35!”

The Fill-a-Backpack School Supply Drive was a big success for everyone involved.
