Corporate Philanthropy is possible for any size company when you use strategic resources such as membership in Entrepreneurs for North Texas.
Sometimes, it is difficult to know how or where to focus time and energy on community service projects, especially if your business only has a small number of employees. But there is a way to maximize your efforts, especially when you join Entrepreneurs for North Texas (EFNT) as your community service outsource provider.
EFNT is a program that facilitates corporate philanthropy and community involvement for small and mid-size companies. Shields Legal Group joined EFNT at the end of 2013 and was awarded its prestigious North Star Award on June 3, 2015 at the 14th Annual Spirit of Entrepreneurship event.
Patrick Brandt, Chairman of the EFNT Board, announced the North Star Award by noting that Shields Legal Group “…hasn’t been part of EFNT that long, but talk about going ‘all in’ from the moment they joined…”
Under the stewardship of Katherine D. Hoke, Managing Partner of Shields Legal, the Impact l 365 Program was created with the mission of challenging its employees to take intentional action to give back, 365 days a year. The program is focused on three primary objectives: (1) sustaining the environment through the firm’s Going Greener Office Policy; (2) lending a helping hand through volunteer service; and (3) giving back through financial gifts.
“EFNT provided the structure we needed to start giving back to the community,” remarked Jim Shields, founder and principal of the law firm. “Our fifteen employees had the heart and desire to give back, but we simply lacked the in-house resources to make it happen in a meaningful way. Through EFNT, our impact on the community has been immediate and focused on the areas of interest to our employees.”
From mid-March, 2014 through April 30, 2015, Shields Legal contributed more than 146 hours of volunteer time through EFNT’s Plug ‘N Plays. Two food drives were also organized to benefit Minnie’s Food Pantry in Plano, Texas. A toy drive benefiting Project Hope and a backpack drive for Project Transformation was also completed.
Although the difference the firm has made in the community through its EFNT membership is gratifying, the greatest unexpected benefit is the fellowship and bonding the firm’s employees have experienced through the program. As Cathie Shields, the firm’s office manager recently remarked, “the Impact l 365 program has brought a positive energy to our office that I’ve never seen in 20 years. What started out as a mission to give back to others, has given each of us a gift in return.”
