Impact 365

It’s about giving back.  In February 2013, Jim Shields decided it was time for Shields Legal Group to start giving back.  But how can a group of 15 people make much of a difference in a community of five million?

The answer to that question is so simple that it inspired a community involvement project we call: IMPACT│365. The effect is so profound that it has dramatically changed each member of the firm.

IMPACT│365 inspires each individual in the firm to take intentional action every day to help someone else. When we each do our small part every day, we ultimately give back in a big way.  When 15 people focus on intentional action in service for others each and every day of the year, big things happen. Just think – 365 acts of service x 14 = 5,110 total impacts on other people in one year.

What can you do to impact someone else today?

CFT Annual Report

Giving Back is Good for You

When we created IMPACT│365, we knew that we were embarking on a new adventure of giving. We could never have predicted the impact it would have on others, but also internally on our small law firm.

Over the past three years, we have come together to make sandwiches for DISD students who otherwise would not eat a meal during the summer, created Hope Boxes for homeless children, worked multiple shifts and held food drives for Minnie’s Food Pantry, and painted a learning center for Heart House Dallas.

The experience of coming together as a group focused on projects that impact others has added an intangible connection inside Shields Legal Group. “The energy around giving through IMPACT│365 has strengthened our entire team,” Cathie Shields, Office Manager of Shields Legal, noted after one of the events.

“We wouldn’t be able to accomplish any of these projects without our partnership with Communities Foundation of Texas,” said Jim Shields. “We value our relationship with CFT and look forward to many more years of giving back to the community.”

Communities Foundation of Texas recently chose Shields Legal Group to be one of the five member companies to showcase in their Annual Report. They even created a 30 second radio spot that is now playing on KERA’s radio station. To listen, click here.

We are so excited to be part of this amazing group!

Shields Legal Group and Freedom Day

This is the 15th year that Entrepreneurs for North Texas (EFNT), part of Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has hosted Freedom Day. We are a proud sponsor of this event and joined more than 740 volunteers to work at 15 project sites across the DFW area.

On September 11, 2016, more than 20 Shields Legal Group employees and family members volunteered at Heart House Dallas.  We painted walls, cleaned shelves and arranged books and furniture for the children of refugee families. Heart House Dallas serves the refugee community in Vickery Meadows, by providing after-school education, care and support to these children.

076Another EFNT member company joined us at Heart House to make the space look great.  RHSB volunteers painted walls, cleaned up play areas and even hung a new white board that takes up an entire wall!  The children of the RHSB volunteers created hand-crafted cards for each child who attends the Heart House program.

Working side by side with other community volunteers was the gift to us. Our payment was the knowledge that by extending ourselves, we helped those less fortunate.

Hope in a Box

SLG community serviceImpact 365 is our evolving community involvement project. Last year we focused on Minnie’s Food Pantry and held several food drives to help stock their shelves.

This year, we changed our focus…to help children who are homeless.

We were introduced to Hope Supply Company by Sejal Desai, Program Director for Entrepreneurs for North Texas.  Hope Supply meets the critical needs of homeless children in North Texas by providing essentials such as diapers, wipes, formula, food, clothes and toys.

Once we had the goal to help homeless kids, we needed a funding vehicle. Since this was around March, and the firm’s office pool was being organized, we decided to donate that money to buy supplies for Hope Supply Company.  SLG Hygiene Kits

That decision began a cascade of kindness that culminated in more than $2,000 and 60 hygiene kits for homeless kids.

We call it “Hope in a Box.” Each box was gift wrapped and included personal hygiene items such as shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrush and tooth paste. Live Happy Magazine also donated inspirational notes and wrist bands to brighten their day.

It is amazing what 15 people, dedicated to making a difference, can do to help our corner of the world.

Entrepreneurs For North Texas (EFNT)

EFNT helps companies serve as good corporate citizens by facilitating their community involvement and philanthropy in a way that’s good for their business.  Today there are more than 80 companies in North Texas participating in EFNT, and more than 50 underwriters significantly supporting the effort.  Shields Legal Group is proud to be a Member Company of EFNT.

Shields Legal Awarded North Star Award

A small group of focused people, united in a common purpose, can make a difference.

Sejal Desai, Jim Shields and Patrick Brandt

That statement was proven last year when Shields Legal Group joined EFNT and got busy giving back. More than 146 volunteer hours (9.73 hours per person), 2 custom food drives for Minnie’s Food Pantry, Freedom Day Sponsorship, Toy and backpack drives…the list of accomplishments goes on. What might have been exhausting instead energized the firm.

Our efforts were recognized by EFNT, our community service outsource partner. On June 3, 2015,  Shields Legal Group was awarded their prestigious North Star Award.

Acceptance speech

“We are humbled by this honor,” Jim Shields said after learning of the award. “I am so grateful to the attorneys and staff of SLG for answering the call to ‘give back.’ This award has energized the firm to do even more in 2015.”

The firm is excited about the service projects for 2015, including Freedom Day, held on September 11, 2015 to honor those who lost loved ones or who were effected by the events of that day.

A Journey Begins with the First Step

community serviceHow can a small company of 15 people make a big impact in their community?

That was the question that we struggled with answering. There was never enough focus, direction or decisiveness around the desire of “wanting to give back.” As a result, nothing was accomplished.

Until we joined Entrepreneurs for North Texas (EFNT), part of Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT). EFNT became our outsourced Community Service Director and suddenly, Shields Legal Group was making a difference.

“The impact on employee morale and the relationship enhancement within the firm was amazing to watch,” noted Jim Shields, Founder and Principal. “We grew as individuals in the structured process provided by EFNT events,” he added. “Something that I did not anticipate was that by giving back, it also improved our relationships with our clients.”

SLG Donated 1,000 Boxes of Instant Mashed Potatoes

When several SLG attorneys and staff volunteered at Minnie’s Food Pantry, they immediately recognized the Food Pantry’s constant need for food staples. That is why SLG started a Mashed Potato Drive to donate 1,000 of instant mashed potatoes to Minnies by July 7, 2014.
